11. Databases
Much of the discussion surrounding mobile apps and consumer technology in general focuses on data. Almost every app that you use collects some form of user data, which is typically necessary for the service to be effective. Think about the apps you use most commonly. Facebook? Twitter? Most of them are just tools that connect you to a source of data.
Creating and maintaining such databases is a tremendous task and typically can take a lot of resources from a company. For example, the company Nutritionix builds and maintains an online database of food information, such as ingredients lists and nutritional information.
