14. Consistency and Specialization

In The Elements of Typographic Style, Robert Bringhurst lays down decades’ worth of definitive, authoritative advice on the topic of typography. But before launching into his catalog of the rules and commandments every designer must know, he offers this encouragement: “By all means leave the road when you wish. That is precisely the use of a road: to reach individually chosen points of departure.” As it is with type, so it is with software. Much of your quest as a designer will be to find the right times to stick to the road, and the right times to step off it.
