Diegetic

A diegetic interface is one that uses elements of the game itself to give the player information or statistics. Because the elements are actual game elements, they do not pull the player from the experience and do not interfere with the action. A good example would be the dashboard in a racing game, using the gauges and readouts to give the player accurate information. This is still part of the game world, but it’s not an overlay and it still helps the player with vital information.
