Authority

In any human civilization, there is a sense of authority. Even in the animal world, there is an elaborate authority structure. Generally, people follow the directions of those they believe to hold some authority over them. There are different set ups in which authority is either stated or implied. At home, children obey their parents since they have authority over them. In school, students obey their teachers.

In courts, lawyers show respect to the judge and jury. In organizations, employees follow the directions of their superiors. On the streets, civilians respect the police.
