When individuals from different cultures come together in the workplace, conflict may occur—not just because of language differences but because of cultural differences, especially when associates are recent immigrants.

Learning about the cultures you supervise is helpful in minimizing conflict and improving communication. Books such as Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands (available in several different editions) and Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to Working with People from Other Cultures (Brooks Peterson, Nicholas Brealey Publishing, January 2004) are excellent resources.
