Music as Enhancement
Steve’s venture into music as a way to summon spirit provides an important warning. Expressive activity is powerful. When it works, it is majestic. When it goes awry, it can backfire resonantly, leaving in its wake suspicion, feelings of manipulation, and a sense of betrayal. The composers of the ill-fated musical had a good idea. Their effort misfired because they ignored tradition and lost touch with their audience. The resulting performance evoked disappointment and alienation instead of positive spirit.
