Fortunately, you’ve just learned one of the keys to being seen as capable and results oriented: make only promises you can keep. I notice that the leaders who consistently get results are clear-eyed and realistic about the results they can get (fair witness). They sign up for only the results they believe are achievable. In fact, this is really another aspect of doing what you say you’ll do.

Courage comes into this at times as well. If your boss is requiring you to get results that you don’t believe are possible, you need to say so. And then your wisdom comes into play: you need to make a case for why you think it’s not possible, based on your experience and infor­mation.
