Start by Listening

In another book I wrote a few years ago, Growing Great Employees, I proposed that listening is the foundation of success for those who manage others, and I devoted the entire first chapter of that book to teaching my readers how to become better listeners.

I also believe that listening is the foundation of success for those who want to lead; being able to listen well is intrinsic to each of the six leader qualities. My work with good and great leaders over the past twenty years has shown me that it’s possible to be truly farsighted, passionate, courageous, wise, generous, and trustworthy only if you listen deeply and consistently to those you lead.
