Nudge, Test, and Escalate Gradually

NO ONE KNOWS what would have happened if Nick Russo had followed Jerome off the subway, but he probably would have faced a whole new set of challenges. In this respect, Russo’s situation resembles that of many quiet leaders. Despite careful efforts—such as drilling down or checking how much political capital they have—their strong commitment to do something rather than walk away leads them into situations where the path ahead is far from clear.
