When we introduce the idea of the informal organization to clients they often respond by saying something like, “You’re talking about the soft stuff, right? Emotional intelligence? Feelings? Morale? Engagement?”
Yes. And no. The informal organization is indeed about feelings: pride, connection, resistance, fear, and accomplishment. But leading outside the lines is ultimately about influencing behaviors that determine performance and results. In fact, it is very often about accelerating results rather than ultimately eking them out!
