Few successful business strategies are developed by managers without a clear understanding of the competition, product, and customers. If someone presented you with a strategic plan that ignored the context of your business, you probably wouldn't even bother reading it. So it is with leading geeks. If you don't understand and acknowledge the environment in which geeks live and work, you are unlikely to become an effective leader of geeks (see Figure 1.1 in Chapter One).
