I’ve always admired the Marine Corps’ camaraderie, ethos, and spirit, which is why in 1994 I was curious about what it took to serve in an organization known as “The few. The proud.” I wanted to understand the benefits of serving in what is arguably the most demanding branch of the armed forces. I had the unique opportunity to spend a week as a participant in Marine Corps Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. I was the first female journalist to actively enroll in the rigorous training that all Marine recruits endure. The experience left me with a lasting impression of the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to earn the title “Marine.”
