10.2. What Is Company Culture?

A good way to grasp the concept of company culture is to think of a firm as a minicivilization. All civilizations have a group of animating beliefs and values that give meaning, purpose, and direction. These beliefs constitute culture. The United States, for example, is centered on the beliefs and values found in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. If you reduce those beliefs down to their essence, you might say that our national animating principles are "equality before the law" and "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," among others.
