22.1. The Logical Evolution of the Net

In the history of the Internet, the granddaddy of Internet companies, Netscape, had led the way in showing us how to use Internet technology to bring business processes on-line. These on-line processes not only increased efficiency but also helped improve both the top and bottom lines of a business; this was what IBM later termed e-business. Other first movers—the Amazon.coms and the Schwabs of the world—figured out how to sell goods and services on the Net and got e-commerce off to a running start. And even though e-commerce has certainly taken some hits recently, it is clear that it is here to stay and will remain a key element for just about any business with goods and services to sell.
