18.5. Protocol 2: Impact

Not all ideas lead to successful innovation. Creativity means new ideas; innovation means that new ideas have impact. To move from ideas to impact requires rigorous filtering. Innovation leaders require both objective and subjective data for the following screens:

  • Strategic fit. Will the idea fit within the existing strategy of the business? Will it be consistent with the identity and core competencies of the firm? Will it be credible for our firm to pursue this idea?

  • Potential value. Will the idea be commercial? Will there be possible financial margins or other impact to justify further investments?

  • Opportunity size. Will the idea be large enough to pursue? Will there be sufficient demand for the product or service created? ...
