Level 1: Participant Reaction and Intention

The first level of evaluation gathers data on both the participants’ overall reaction to the training environment and their intentions beyond the training program itself. There are two possible opportunities for conducting a Level 1 evaluation: during the training and at its conclusion. Here are some ideas for assessing participants’ reactions for each.

During the training:

  • Conduct periodic “checks” of participants’ reactions at key transition points. This might include taking time for a break to ask individual participants how the training is going by asking such questions as are we addressing the right things and is the pace too fast, too slow, or just right?
