Governing Assumptions about Organizational Change

The change model introduced in this chapter and integrated throughout this book is based upon a number of fundamental governing assumptions. We want to make these assumptions explicit so you can better understand both the origin of the model and the training program designs.

Our assumptions about change and how to lead people through it successfully include

  • Change is inevitable; growth is optional. Change is simply part of the human experience. It is ever-present and inescapable. You can’t turn your back on change—it will happen regardless—but you can turn your back on growth and learning. And the absence of growth and learning leads to decline and obsolescence.
