Preface

There are lots of managers in the world, focusing on tasks to help businesses and governments meet their goals. There are far fewer leaders, focusing on aligning the right people to the right tasks at the right time. I do not believe that people are born into leadership. I have seen many unlikely leaders rise to the occasion when the situation merits. I believe that individually we all decide if and when it is time to commit ourselves to serving the people we will lead, and that opens us to developing the competencies required to be effective leaders. No one of us can have all the competencies at one time, but a great leader will surround himself or herself with the people who fill in the gaps. As I sit here writing in the spring of 2003, ...
