9. Leadership

In this book we have talked about many things, but our primary objective has been to describe why and how to build a competitive knowledge workforce. As we noted in Chapter 1, Peter Drucker said [Drucker 1997],

The productivity of knowledge workers will not be the only competitive factor in the world economy. It is, however, likely to become the decisive factor, at least for most industries in developed countries.

So, at least according to Drucker, a productive knowledge workforce is the key to the future. This is a leadership challenge, for, as he also said [Drucker 1969],

To make knowledge work productive will be the greatest management task of this century, just as to make manual labor productive was the great management task ...
