LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT PERFORMANCE, NOT POSITION

Leadership used to be about the position you held. If you were the king, you were the leader regardless of whether you were good or bad. The only known sanction was murder, but the costs of bungling the murder were painful in the extreme. So most kings kept going unless they were exceptionally evil or incompetent. At every level beneath the king, status determined how much of a leader you were.
