RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP
Harry S. Truman, the US President, famously had a sign on his desk saying “the buck stops here”. He was right. The buck always stops with the leader. You can and should delegate tasks. You should also delegate some of your authority so that people can complete their tasks. But you can never delegate away your responsibility.
But what is the leader really responsible for? I found the answer in the middle of the open steppe in Mongolia. I was with the sports superstar of Mongolia: Choidog. In a horse-crazy country, he was their champion horse trainer. A nadaam, or festival, was being held to honour his lifetime of achievement.
