Keep your word.

 

“You’re only as good as your word.” Do you remember your father ever saying that to you or your siblings? Dads want their kids to understand that they should never make promises that they can’t keep, and that if a promise is made, they must do everything they can to follow through. Children test this principle early on by saying things like, “Dad, if you let me do this one thing, I promise I will (take out the trash, do the dishes, etc.).” Kids don’t always intend to honor their commitments, and dads know this from their own experience. The stage is set for a very important lesson about personal honor.
