“Wait ’til your father gets home!”

“Just wait ’til your father gets home!” These words most likely sparked the same fear in you as a child as they did for millions and millions of other children. They hinted at the existence of a higher authority—one who had the power to enforce punishment if you broke the rules. Every organization has such an authority figure; respect this individual much the same as you would your parents. Accept his or her authority, and obey their rules.

Authority is most effective when everyone in the organization clearly understands the rules and obeys them. What are the rules? Are they all fair and reasonable? What are the consequences of not following them? It is unfair (and possibly illegal) to hold employees ...
