STATE OF THE NATION: CRITICAL CROSSROADS

August 30, 2003

Greetings. Today, I believe that we are at a critical crossroads as a Nation, as communities, and as individual citizens. We must come face-to-face with a serious weakness that has become epidemic. We see symptoms of the trouble in the growth of diabetes, the clamor for free housing and social services, and the devastating effects of methamphetamine production and use.

This epidemic has blinded many of us to our own abilities, responsibilities, and opportunities. Our vision is cloudy, and we often stumble and grasp for things to help us stand. But the things that we take hold of are not things that build us up. They are props that hold us up, barely keeping us from falling.
