INTRODUCTION

The Cherokee Nation Constitution requires an annual state of the nation report by the principal chief. By custom, this report is presented on the Saturday during the Cherokee National Holiday, which is held on Labor Day weekend. The holiday commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution on September 3, 1839, after the Trail of Tears. There was a large gathering at our national capitol building on the town square in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I had been in office one year. I had not fired any Cherokee Nation staff that supported my predecessor because I believed in their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and association.
