ACTIVITY 1: Popular Opinion on Leadership

Instructions: Assign these tasks to teams of students or to individuals.

What is available about leadership online and in popular opinion? Complete these two tasks to examine leadership in popular culture.

  1. Conduct an Internet search of the term leadership. Take 20 minutes and search the term leadership. What kinds of web sites pop up? What is their focus? To what extent do the sites focus on leaders or the process of leadership? Make notes of your answers.
  2. Conduct a survey. Ask 10 people (family and friends might be good sources) how they define leadership. Use the following question (so we have consistency across all the responses).
    • Suggestions for introducing the topic with your respondents:

      Hi, I'm taking a class on leadership. One of my first assignments is to ask people how they define leadership. Can you please provide me with a short definition of leadership by completing this sentence: “Leadership is. …”
