Columns usually appear under one byline and purport to be the work of one author. But I would have found it impossible to produce the articles that are the backbone of this book without the advice, knowledge and feedback generously and uncomplainingly supplied by colleagues at the Financial Times.

Ravi Mattu and Adam Jones, successive editors of the FT’s Business Life pages, and Harriet Arnold, their deputy, worked on many of the weekly columns when they first appeared. They have been, and remain, patient sounding boards for my ideas. While I take responsibility for everything that appears under my name, they and many other editorial colleagues have saved me from bad calls and occasionally from outright errors.
