The Johnson School of Management at Cornell University recently surveyed executives from several Fortune 1000 companies and MBA students from the top twenty business schools. They were asked, “What characteristics will business leaders need for success a decade from now?” The answers from these two groups were startlingly different.

The executives clearly cited compassion as one of the most important characteristics needed for success. Only team building was mentioned more often. These two characteristics were chosen more than any of the others, including competitiveness, intelligence, and aggressiveness.
