Decisions in organizations flow from the top down. Right? The truth is that many organizations have seen a dramatic change in this area in recent years. Decisions are being pushed closer to the customer, closer to the market, closer to the frontline work. This can be very effective. In many cases, though, I have seen it lead to paralysis by analysis as people collect more and more data or search for the perfect formula while delaying decisions. Some of this activity is purely defensive (people are covering their backs), and the problem can be solved by trusting people and letting them make a few mistakes.
