Thinking About Strategic Leadership

We have identified three ways to look at strategic leadership: the perspectives of the individual leader, the competitive environment, and the organization.

The first perspective views the qualities or characteristics of the individual leader. Sometimes, for example, strategic leadership is framed in terms of how a single leader profoundly affects his or her organization or even the world. James MacGregor Burns's classic work on transformational leadership comes to mind here, and there are also other works that focus on the importance of the visionary leader to strategic change.
