Leadership as Paranoia?

As Melodie Croonenberghs and Cheryl B. Smith have noted in recent issues of Leadership in Action (18[3], p. 15; 18[6], p. 14), anticipation is a key component of leadership. And as they suggest, certain elements of anticipation can indeed be developed in leaders. But how much can leaders really learn about anticipation, and from what does anticipation spring?

Smith says that for Intel chairman Andrew Grove, paranoia is the essence of anticipation. This suggests that Grove is driven by paranoia and that paranoia is an acceptable leadership quality. I have never heard of paranoia being part of any leadership curriculum, nor would I ever recommend it as a strategy or tactic. And I don't believe Grove himself ...
