In our work we have found that once managers have been given a foreign assignment, they are effectively abandoned by their organizations. They are not told the expectations for the assignment, and their families are not supported in planning the move or given sufficient, if any, information on settling in. Furthermore, it is very common for repatriation, because of the lack of support, to be the most distressing part of the whole assignment.

Not providing support that runs from the beginning to the end of the assignment is foolhardy for those organizations seeking international success. Outbound transition, family adjustment, equitable compensation, and repatriation are especially important support issues.
