Factors such as economic globalization and the information technology explosion have placed many organizations today in a constant state of change. So it's only natural that executive selectors are more likely to look to the outside for candidates with the experience, skills, knowledge, and other credentials that may be missing from the organization and are needed to keep the organization evolving and on the cutting edge. But the expectations for external executives once on the job often turn out to be a fatal onus. Internal candidates, in contrast, are more often chosen when the organization believes it will do just fine under the status quo and with an executive who can be given the time and room to develop.
