Different Grading Systems

Our research found that once a hiring decision has been made, the divergent paths of internal and external executives coalesce on at least one front: the way they are managed. In general, neither type of executive is supported in any special way once in the new position, and executives hired from outside the organization do not receive any more support from their superiors than do internal hires. Interestingly, even though internal candidates are often selected to give them an opportunity to develop, once hired they are just as unlikely as external executives to be purposely given on- or off-the-job assistance in development.
