Health can be maintained during periods of stress either by reducing the extent and degree of the strain or by becoming more resistant to its effects. Two ways that have been shown to increase resiliency to stress are securing a strong social support system and improving physical fitness.

Just as well-built foundations and sturdy construction materials make buildings strong, the support of others and physiological strength allow people to bear heavier loads of stress. Studies have found correlations between mortality and having a social support network—in other words, there is strong evidence that friends and family help individuals live longer.
