BAD HAIR DAY

I awoke early in my hotel in Shanghai, with an entire Sunday to do as I pleased. My body was still on U.S. time, and I was wide-awake at 4 A.M. At 6 I decided to take a walk and find some breakfast. Even though it was early, the streets were already crowded. I stopped to rest and watched a surreal scene: white-clad senior citizens doing aerobics to big-band music. As I sat on the edge of a concrete planter, an ancient man came and plopped down right next to me, so close that our legs were touching. He knew a little English and struck up a conversation. Another man came and sat on my other side. He began rubbing his hand up and down my arm, laughing. As I recoiled he pointed at the hair on my arm and then at his arm, which was hairless. ...
