TRADITIONAL APPROACH

Taking a genuine interest in other people's heritage can go a long way. I once asked a Saudi businessman if there were still Bedouins in his country. I remembered reading about them in Leon Uris's book The Haj, and I was intrigued by the idea of twentieth-century nomads. The businessman was surprised but pleased when I asked. It turned out he was descended from a Bedouin family, and he proceeded to happily tell me stories about his family's tribe.
