WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Table manners vary wildly from place to place, and you'll often encounter some quirky edibles. At a dinner party in Australia, one of the dessert courses was a rectangular piece of nougat. After unwrapping the outer foil, I discovered a second, thinner layer of white paper covering the candy.

Most of our significant learning results from experiencing key events.

I painstakingly removed each bit of the paper, even though it was disintegrating in my fingers. Finally my host said, “G'wan, Craig, eat the paper. It's made of rice.” I looked up to see that I was the only one at the table with a neat pile of crispy pieces of paper next to my plate.
