One Prescription for Working Across Cultures

For me, the best part of working in the field of leadership and leadership development has been the opportunity to travel to other countries to work with clients. As much as I would like to prepare for every possible subtle cultural difference I encounter, however, the reality is that I travel on short notice. So I have adopted a simple dictum that I apply when I'm visiting and working in other countries. It's stolen from the medical profession: First, do no harm. It boils down to using basic manners and a bit of self-awareness to monitor my behavior—for instance, whether I'm being too loud or hogging people's personal space. (Both are my tendencies.)
