DOWN THE GARDEN PATH

I often fall for this shock tactic used by publications, and it happened again when I saw an article in the June 2002 HR Magazine with the headline, “Does 360-Degree Feedback Negatively Affect Company Performance?” The headline captured my attention, particularly because my employer is in the 360-degree-feed-back business, and I read the article with great interest.

Like the headline on the article about tires, the headline on the HR Magazine piece is misleading. Even though it is phrased as a question, it's a rhetorical one, and the implied answer is clear. A better and more accurate title would have been, “360-Degree Feedback, When Poorly Implemented, Can Be Hazardous.”
