Leadership Lessons from a Whaleboat

I am a student of leadership. Like an artist who sees a painting in boats anchored in the harbor or a composer who hears a melody in the sound of gull calls mixed with the lapping waves, I see leadership all around me. Over the past several years my favorite place for contemplating leadership lessons has been at the second oar of a whaleboat in New Bedford Harbor in Massachusetts. I have found the whaleboat a particularly good laboratory for observing fundamental lessons in various aspects of leadership: vision, balance, pace, position, and development.
