Some issues to anticipate when developing leadership in emerging markets include the need to hire on the basis of language capability rather than managerial and functional competency; the challenge of keeping people in their jobs long enough to learn from their actions; the importance of setting career-track expectations; the desirability of repayment agreements for advanced degree programs; the need to address mismatches between mentors and mentees and coaches and coachees; the importance of providing accurate and continuous feedback on total performance; and the need to be aware that ambitious local talent will be easily lured to opportunities offered by fast-growing homegrown rivals.
