The navigational coaching process should also have the following characteristics:

The coach should go to the departing employee, meeting him or her in convenient locations. Visiting an outplacement office can be unsettling or even humiliating—and employees seldom visit such offices after the first month or so. (Research shows that once a person has a good résumé, cover letter, networking list, and list of targeted organizations, he or she needs face-to-face contacts to get a job.)

The departing employee should be coached through a complete process of planning, perspective taking, preparation, practice, and referrals. Clearly, this is much more than the standard outplacement effort, which frequently amounts to a couple of hours ...
