POINT OF ORIGIN

A few readers have asked me how I started writing this column. My first piece emerged from a white paper I wrote called “The Smart People's Club,” which was an attempt to help people with high mental agility but low interpersonal skills ratchet up their effectiveness as leaders. Things kind of took off from there.

I haven't had to look too far to find interesting people with unique perspectives on leadership. Sometimes the stories closest to home are the most absorbing.

One thing I do try to do in every column is provide practical tips to help individuals be more effective in their work and their personal lives. I decided that I didn't want my columns to be based on interviews with the same top leadership gurus who are featured ...
