MAJOR BARRIERS

The need to increase women's leadership in health care systems has been recognized in several recent studies by major health care professional organizations such as the AAMC and ACHE. Five major barriers to women's advancement have been identified, along with suggested strategies for overcoming them. Some of these strategies focus on increasing individual women's leadership competencies, whereas others stress organizational issues such as providing equal access, increasing the visibility of women, recognizing relational skills such as collaboration and mentoring, and changing organizational culture.
