RIDING IT OUT

In the grand scheme of things my situation is, of course, not a crisis at all. By 10 A.M. I have adjusted to the idea of staying home, rearranged my schedule, finished up a couple of hours worth of paperwork via e-mail, drunk too much coffee, and looked forward to hanging out with and taking care of the boys. The only big decision I have to make is whether to take them to see the doctor today. My wife and I chat by phone, and we both optimistically diagnose this as a twenty-four-hour bug and decide to ride it out. Which causes me to reflect: I can't begin to count the number of times over the past ten years that we have called the pediatrician's office and asked for an appointment that day. Fifty? A hundred?
