Relations-oriented behaviors are most effective when used in complementary ways. Consistent use of supporting and recognizing, for instance, conveys the leader's respect and positive regard for people and improves interpersonal relations. Consulting, team building, empowering, and developing can be used together to improve decisions and build the skills, self-confidence, and commitment of direct reports. Developing more skills and self-confidence in people makes it more possible to involve them in making important decisions and to delegate important tasks to them.
