Social identity is connected with issues of power and privilege. At some time you may have experienced feeling the power and privilege associated with being a member of a dominant group, or in-group. You may have also felt the powerlessness and disadvantage of being a member of a nondominant group, or out-group. Moreover, membership in a particular identity group may make you part of the in-group in some contexts and part of the out-group in other contexts.

Aspects of your identity that seem insignificant to you may become huge benefits or obstacles when you are working in certain situations or with particular groups.
