RAISING THE LEVEL

The study looked at the behavior of leaders of virtual teams across a team performance continuum ranging from less effective to effective to highly effective. The study found that certain behaviors can help leaders of virtual teams progress from one level of team performance to a higher level. For example, if the leader of a less effective virtual team focuses on the following leadership best practices, the team's performance is more likely to increase to the effective level:

  • Use knowledge of cultural differences to enhance team performance.
  • Ensure there are adequate resources to support the team.
  • Help others achieve goals and objectives.
  • Take accountability for their own actions.
