Change has to be inspired from the top down but accomplished from the bottom up. Desired changes must be communicated from the top level of the organization to the bottom level through the institution’s administrative and faculty chains of command. The administrative chain of command goes from the president to the academic vice president to the dean to the department chair to individual faculty members. The faculty chain of command represents the principle of shared governance and is composed of the chair and officers of the faculty senate (or similarly named body), the heads of the various senate committees, and the individual faculty members.
